Love a Dub Dub!

Remember those old time Valentine card craft books? You had to cut your own cards out and then paste together the envelopes. They had cute drawings with awful love puns and no matter how careful I was, they always turned out crooked, torn and sort of pathetic looking. And remember when you used to be able to bring cards only for the people you liked! I guess some time in the 80’s ‘they’ started making you bring cards for everyone so no one would feel left out. You may think it was cruel for some kids to over-look other kids and deny them the fun of receiving badly crafted art but I say maybe it was a character building lesson…

Berry July!

When the kids were little, one of the first official events of the summer was to go strawberry picking. We tried many different farms and finally settled on the Bob Featherstone berry patch in Richmond mainly because when I asked if it was OK if the kids came in to pick and whether it was also OK if they ate a few while picking, the owners remarked, ‘well how can you pick these beautiful, delicious strawberries and NOT try a few?’ This sentiment was not shared by all the farmers let me tell you. Anyway, this family has had our business ever since and we only need a happy hour or so to gather enough pails to enjoy fresh strawberry…

May the Math be Over…Please!

I am just going to launch straight away into this month’s rant. I wanna know, exactly when I am finally going to be free from homework? I mean sheesh, I have been doing it since third grade and I am wondering if it will ever end? OK, the work stuff can be new ground and generally quite appealing to research as it is of professional interest but come on…long division? correct use of prepositions, adjectives and metaphors? conjugating French verbs? For crying out loud, I didn’t conjugate French verbs when I was in school. To be fair, I will say that thankfully, my kids seem to manage with the grammar from both languages mainly on their own but OMG! OK…

Just Dance

Every once in a while I am transported back to my childhood in the most surprising way. Recently, I was just doing some errands and above the din of the shopping centre, I caught the dulcet tones of Robbie Dupree singing ‘Steal Away’ and my mind was immediately flooded with memories of school sock hops, making tapes recorded from the radio and the scratchy, distorted sound produced by bad speakers with the volume turned up past 10. My Dad was a great lover of music, he would strum his guitar every so often, singing some love ballad about a girl with brown eyes and call us over to sing along whenever he caught us lurking out of ear-shot. And he…

Happy Days!

Are you enjoying some fun summertime activities? It really has been a great year for sunshine and mosquitoes. We are headed out for some camping early this month and I am hoping to actually turn off my phone! What a forgotten concept! It used to be that when you went camping (or anywhere) you could unplug…no wait, you weren’t actually plugged in to begin with, you just drove away from the phone jack and presto…no more phone calls! No one could reach you and the planet didn’t implode. Oh right, that would still be the case. Lately I just can’t stop longing for the days when we didn’t have an expectation to work 80 hours a week and always return…

Patience Please

Hello everyone,   Thanks for coming by to have a look at this new website.  It is sadly not finished and I am working on it when I have time.  You will know from earlier posts (they are coming) that I am not so tech savvy and so this is incredibly painful for me. I want to upload my properties, sold properties and the archive of newsletters I have and it will come…soon…ish. Thanks for your patience!!

All’s Fall

Hello Everyone! I hope everyone has recovered from the past weekend of sugar-rush deteriorating to chocolate coma followed by crazed insanity.  And don’t get me started on my kids’ glucose-induced behaviour! We are madly rushing toward the final holiday season of the year and that means projects, shopping, expectations and generally un-attainable dreams of the perfect Christmas/Hannukah/Kwansa/fill-in-the-blank that will test your patience, bank account and optimism until the last gourmet cookie crumb, scrap of tinsel and family heirloom is vacuumed up or lovingly bubble wrapped and packed away until next year. I have absolutely been guilty of over-achieving for the holidays and I am determined to STOP the madness this year.  Mainly because I cannot afford whatever latest techno-gadget is all the rage for kids this…
