2019 Salutations!

Today is a beautiful day and I wish you all a super month and an exceptional 2019. I was having some trouble with this missive this month and was looking everywhere for inspiration in order to get started. I can’t even believe that I have been writing this column now for the better part of 3 years and that got me thinking about where the idea even came from to write the way I do because this particular format was kind of an accident. My original idea was to create a forum for informative but entertaining Real Estate statistics (sadly, not possible). And so, the first newsletters combined some basic real estate news with the usual request for referrals but…

Here we are, the final hoorah for 2018. This year we are back to embracing all that is right and wrong about the holidays! The last few years due to various family issues, we have celebrated in a more low key fashion and I gotta be honest, after 15 years of being a little uber-zealous for the kids, I was burnt out and not in the mood to go all type-A on the festivities anyway. So, this year after my youngest expressed her deep disappointment over the serious lack of holiday Ho Ho in her twelve short years, I decided recess was over and it was time to pull out all the stops and make a return to the over-decorating,…

I have been thinking lately about the word busy. Everybody is busy. I have tried to adopt a personal policy of not using the word as it feels like, ‘we are soooo busy lately’ has become everyone’s go to defense for our inability to make time to connect with friends and family. I mean maybe you want an excuse to put off certain obligations but over-all, I think we are just over-committed. Everyone seems to be working too many hours and chasing kids to and from all their activities. When you add society pressure to try and include some sort of activity that sparks joy in us or get some much needed exercise in addition to staying on top of…

I know this is the month of my favorite holiday but there is another celebration this month involving turkey and excess. Yes, Thanksgiving my friends. I do look forward to the feast this weekend inspires and go to great lengths to prepare all the family favorites to appease the hungry hordes. But, the sentiment of this day is generally lost on all of us by the time the last dish is washed and put away. Let’s face it, life can be a struggle and sometimes it is very hard to find things to appreciate beyond, ‘yay, I woke up today’. So, I started to think about what I am thankful for and I was surprised to find that I do…

I hope you all had a great summer with a little R and R to get you through to the end of another whirlwind year. I have been helping my Mom with a very significant downsize the past few months. She has been in the same house for 38 years and while I and my siblings are guilty of stashing a few childhood items in the back of a couple closets, it is safe to say the bulk of accumulated ‘treasures’ are Mom’s alone. My Dad’s domain was the garage and the barn and various other out-buildings and the yard and the side of the driveway and in the driveway… but I will save that sorry tale of excess for…

So this month my youngest celebrates a birthday and she is approaching the ‘oh so pleasant’ teen years. I cannot overstate that the hormones have already kicked in and the mood-swings, attitude and complete disregard for parental authority have comfortably settled into her whole persona and she is, as you can imagine, an absolute delight to be around. I guess I remember being a challenge at this age and so I try to be patient and understanding and I find that wine helps. (for me) She is sort of beyond the age for parties but we do honor her special day with some family dinners and she will invite a friend or two. The main hurdle has always been the…

Beautiful Summer

What is on your agenda for the next few months of mostly good weather? Will you be heading out of town to see the sights? Stay for the summer festivals and activities or a bit of both? It’s a happy dilemma to have and though I complain about keeping everyone entertained, I do like a break from the same-y-ness of the school year. I sent a list of summer activities once a few years ago. Here is a new list that reflects some more age appropriate pastimes for our family and some completely surprising diversions we have discovered over the years. 1. Lochside Trail – walk on the ferry in Tsawassen with your bike and then take a 2 hour…

Looks like summer time in the City! And, having the kids home from school EVERY day is coming up fast. I am facing a very different summer than previous years. With two kids working full time and one who is starting to be embarrassed by my presence, I fear the ‘family vacation’ may be on hiatus for a spell. Which means that I have no more excuses to avoid work, clean the basement, deal with my recycling, finish all the half-started projects around the house…the usual. In same news, let’s just re-visit the whole summer break dilemma again shall we. In summers past, I have pre-meditated every day of the holidays as much for my kids’ benefit as for my…
